The Sachin Tendulkar Debate

How good is Sachin Tendulkar, really?

Because, when Sachin bats, all else…is irrelevant

p.s: Now, we know that when it comes to this subject, there is no word that even approaches ‘final’. So, I’d encourage you to weigh in on what you think. About the argument that five points of view can yield five different top-10 lists. That greatness cannot come out of a database query. Or can it? If not this guy, who do you think is the greatest? Sachin without any doubt, the best batsman and he best bahved sportsman, in the entire cricketing history. He is not rated to his real capacity by some of the cricketing experts and boards just because of his being an Indian. Only some injuries have made his to curtaile his flamboyancy and stop playing certain strokes. There is no one who could continue more than two decades and still perform the way he does with so much consistency and cavelry. His dedication and devotion to cricket in general and Indian cricket in particular is unparellel and unbelievable. Inspite the the burden he carries as the prolific scorer of Indian team and the dependance of his team, his remaining so cool and composed speaks volumes about his commitment to Indian cricket. I rate him as the best cricketing genius in the entire cricketing history. Long live Sachine and bring us the world cup to be held in 2011. I wish all the luck to him and the Indian team.

A lot has been written about Sachin Tendulkar, when he scoes runs as well as when he does not. I personally feel that he is over-rated (it does not mean that he is not one of the best), but he has not lived upto the hype he generates. A few pointers:

Not a single 300 or even a 250 in test cricket
Just 4 double centuries in test cricket
Average of 54 is normal, many players have that

you’re missing the point about his ability to have continued performing at that level over two decades . the average might be par for a good batsman over a season or two but keeping it there is what proves difficult (just ask Mike Hussey!)

Well, but not all have a century of international centuries …not all have 30,000 runs at top level and also not all have more then 80 MOM awards ..not all have played for more then 20 years ..not all have smashed Abdul qadir and scored centuries at the seamy old trafford and perth as a teen …not all have carried hopes of billions of fans world wide …not all have ignited our spirits and kindled hope so often …not all have won matches single handedly when half of the team had fixed matches …not all have destroyed all time great bowlers with surgeons precision …if Sachin can be matched ..so can be Gandhi ..so can be God , the Sun ..the moon

What has Sachin Tendulkar not done? What promise has he failed on? What aspiration of the Indian cricket fan has he not met? What shot has he not mastered? What weakness has he displayed? What joy that a cricket fan comes to seek from a great player has he not given? What more does he need to do?

Sachin is a great batsmen. He has surpassed almost all the individual records. He is only next to Don Bradman. Absolutely there will be no second opinion on this by anyone. But oflate it appears, he is not contibuting more to the cause of the team, atleast as per the recent records. He is giving a hard time to the bowlers to get his wicket. But when once he completes his century he is not converting his century to either a match winning innings or match saving innings. He always gets out upon completing his century. Why? Is it lack of momentary lapse of concentration after surpassing the 100 mark or satisfaction of scoring yet another century? Why he is not setting his next goal to win or save the match? But here Dhone scores over Sachin. He does not leave the crease without completing the task. We wish Sachin to win matches once again for India. We also wish he scores more centuries and establish that we Indians are no pushovers in cricket.

sachin is a man, who made cricket as a world’s best festival to relax and enjoy the life. every body loves this festival as long as sachin is on the ground. lets pray for him to have more strenth to win the prestigious world cup rather than giving him rate. coz its not the real respect to a sports man like him.
god bless you and keep on your affort.

Guys who are criticising Sachin for not being able to win matches, Please note that Cricket is not Tennis or Squash. It is a team game. The problem is human memory. It will not remember the positives about someone who always scores. It only seems to remember those instances where sachin scored and India did not win. That is because, in those instances others in the team haven’t performed. Bowlers/ other batsmen etc…

Come on guys, there was a time when cricket was all about sachin playing well. If he did not score, 90% of the time we lost the game. If he scored, may be 50 % of the time we won the game.

We tend to remember only the 50 % of those time when he scored and we lost, is not because of him… It is because of others failures. Imagine Sachin scoring only when we won…. All the matches we lost would have been lost with a new record everytime… (e.g. all out for 30 or 50) We atleast lost those 50 % games with grace cuz of Sachin.

Such control on a team game can be only made by a demi god, and that is Sachin. Period.

Sachin is only the man who created the real interest of cricket. He gives us much delight. He is the owner of all records in ODI. Such as; highest runs, highest centuries, highest half-centuries, highest run in an innings, highest matches etc.
I hope Sachin will not retire since 2015.

    • June 14, 2010 11:02 am

Thanks for the comment Saiful. His impact to the game is beyond the runs scored. I’m sure many of the Bangladesh top order would consider him as their standard when they go out to bat.

I am sorry to write in this about the countries official and valuable positions are making jokes by giving Sachin to an Air force rank and Mohan lal (actor in kerala) giving military rank and vijay mallia Rajya sabha member etc… what actually going on in India’s official and respectful positions. Yes it is a fact there are so many non-qualified, non-deserving guys are being posted in different official positions even including Member of Parlament too. I personally believe the people of India must react on sach type of jokes.. The Constitution must be amended agiast the criminals (begining from MP) to dis qualifiy and the first step must be the right to education is the most and majour right. The right of a citizen must be equal to all instead of finance capacity or position based.

Sachin is undoubtedly the most elegant, glorious and talented stroke player to have played in the last century. Brian Lara was a tad more talented but not as elegant….straight batted shots are very uncommon these days with the advent of the frenetic T20 version of the game, however Sachin still maintains his class as a high calibre batsman.

Comparisons can be made to the West Indian Lawrence Rowe with regards to his effortless timing and manner in which his shots were played caressing the ball with the full face of the bat and with so much time . Sachin Tendulkar is and will be one of the greatest batsmen of all time.

thanks for the comment Dave. I didn’t have the privilege of watching the Carribean greats play but yes, there is still something to be said about the manner of scoring runs and not just the total on the board. Hence a mish-mash of slog-sweeps and “scoops” will never really compete against a full-faced straight drive past the stumps at the bowlers end with the left elbow high and the most miniscule of followthroughs.
